Matching modes
The student can be identified in one of two ways. The student's name, date of birth, and address are always required; the difference is how the student is keyed.
- Mode A — SSN: supply the student's
ssn. This is the original behavior and gives the strongest match. - Mode B — Local ID + District: if you do not have the student's SSN, omit it and instead supply both
localid(the student's local/district id) anddistrictlea(the district's LEA number). Together with the name they identify the student.
If the ssn is omitted, both localid and districtlea are required — supplying only one is an error. If an ssn is supplied it must be valid; a malformed SSN is rejected rather than treated as "no SSN given".

A sample response is listed below.
There are two response fields that are important to note:
- matchId - If this is set, it indicates a successful match was found. Definitely use this as the student State-ID.
- searchIds - When values are present, it indicates potential matches that were found using a loose search.
The stateids above are keys into the students hash in the response.
Each student object contains the following fields:
- reason - A description of why the student was matched (probabilistic-match, or simple-search).
- stateid - The State-ID of the student.
- firstName - The first name of the student.
- lastName - The last name of the student.
- middleName - The middle name of the student.
- uiSearch - Catalog information related to the student.
- guardians - An array of guardian objects, each containing contact information.
- securityQuestions - An array of security questions that can be used for verification.
